FOUNDATIONS FOR NET ZERO BUILDINGS
Enabling consistently high energy performance for new commercial and institutional buildings.
Across Canada, hundreds of new schools, hospitals, office buildings and community centres have opened since 2015. This 3-year national research project, launched in 2024, is identifying the gap between designed and actual performance in new buildings, uncovering considerable potential for utility cost savings and emissions reductions in these facilities.
The project is funded by Natural Resources Canada’s Codes Acceleration Fund.

PROJECT OVERVIEW
Timeline: March 2024 to March 2027
Focusing on 4 building types across 5 provinces, we are benchmarking actual energy performance of hundreds of recently constructed buildings across Canada and comparing their performance against National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings (NECB) archetypes. We are identifying, investigating and documenting the most energy efficient of these facilities. With the help of building owners, we are mapping the development process, from project inception to ongoing facility operations, to identify success factors and process weaknesses which lead to more energy and carbon intensive outcomes . Findings and recommendations will be summarized and published in sector-specific development guides to help building owners deliver consistently high energy efficiency in new buildings under development.
